Nearly half of US medical students report harassment during their training and four out of five feel belittled, according to a study published in this month’s BMJ.
Students who reported harassment or belittlement were significantly more likely to be stressed, depressed or drink alcohol. They were also less likely to report positive ideas about becoming a doctor.

Average medical student debt passed £20,000 for the first time last year, according to the annual BMA Medical Student Survey. Worringly the results show that students also overestimate how much they'll earn in their first year as a junior doctor by 15 per cent.
The survey, which is based on the results of 1,877 students, showed that those in the fifth year of medical school now have on average £20,172 of debt - a 17 per cent increase on 2004. Students doing a sixth year reach £22,365.
