Forgetful? Eat more fish

fish_xsmall.jpgA diet rich in fish, omega-3 oils, fruits and vegetables may lower your risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, according to a study published in the journal Neurology. The study of 8,085 men and women over the age of 65 for four years found people who ate fish at least once a week had a 35 percent lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease and 40 percent lower risk of dementia - but only if they did not carry the gene that increases the risk of Alzheimer’s ApoE4.

Can patients be too fat to fix?

Patients with a BMI over 30 are being refused joint surgery by a Sussex Primary Care Trust. It follows new NICE guidelines stating that patients’ lifestyles can be taken into account in determining if a treatment would be ‘clinically and cost effective’.


Is it ethical? Does it go against what we stand for as doctors? Michelle Connolly and Nicole Chiang asked those involved for their arguments.

Alcohol training for all students

Medical students will be specifically trained to identify and treat patients who are drinking excessively, the Department of Health has announced. The plan includes adding alcohol training to every medical school curriculum within the next three years.

 
Circumcision not linked to decreased sexual satisfaction

Over 98 per cent of circumcised men report the same levels of sexual satisfaction and performance as uncircumscribed men, according to an article published in BJU International.
