Work Overseas - South Africa

South Africa

south_africa.jpgTake some time abroad and gain clinical, travel and life experience in rural South Africa. Having trained and worked there, I am aware of the pros and cons of the experience. Many rural hospitals have a shortage of medical staff at all levels, despite often being in geographically breathtaking parts of Africa. I recommend that people finish at least their Foundation Years before going abroad.

When doctors are expected to kill

At exactly 11pm on the 21st September 2006 forty-eight year old Clarence Hill was strapped to the table at Starke Prison, Florida. The warden gave the signal and a cocktail of lethal drugs was pumped into his veins. At 11.12pm the ECG flatlined and Hill was pronounced dead.

Hill’s execution went ahead despite his lawyers arguing that the lethal injection is inhumane. Many doctors in California agree and believe the method of lethal injection, supposedly painfree, does cause the condemned pain and should be banned.

I enjoyed my medical school elective in Canada so much that I went back  during my SHO years. Canada does have a shortage of doctors at the moment, especially in rural areas, so it’s definitely a place to consider.
