Smallpox alive in Scotland

The vast majority of Scottish people interviewed on the streets of Edinburgh are unaware that smallpox is extinct, according to a poll sponsored by the Society for General Microbiology.

bacteriaweb.jpgOf the 200 people questionned only 13 per cent were aware that smallpox, which killed 300-500 million people during the 20th century, has been eradicated. Smallpox was declared extinct in 1979 following the WHO’s largest vaccination campaign.
