People who adopt four healthy behaviours - smoking cessation, exercise, moderate alcohol intake, and a diet high in fruits and vegetables - live on average an additional fourteen years of life compared with people who adopt none of these behaviours.

muscles_small.jpgThe study, published in the open access journal PLoS Medicine, is based on a lifestyle survey and death rates of 20,000 men and women.

The increased longevity was unrelated to body mass index or social class.
